Docs: Get Up, Get Out, Get Active!

While doctors readily admit there is likely no silver bullet to eliminate disease, there is a reassuring consensus about at lease one important point: the beneficial effects of regular exercise on maintaining good health. A recent report from the Center for Disease Control found that more patients are being advised by their doctors to add

Stretch, Squat, Strengthen

It’s still early in my training plan to walk a faster time in my favorite road race — the Bellin 10-K in June. But I’ve already walked into a familiar foe . . .an achy twinge in my lower back. If you, too, are getting intot the swing of mid-winter workouts and feel that twinge,

Weights, Walking Preserve Guys’ Health

I didn’t need a recent report from the University of Alabama-Birmingham to remind me that “older” guys need to work out diligently to maintain muscle tone and fitness. That message comes through loud and clear on my daily 4.5-mile walks on the riverside trail near my home. I enjoy those walks and the fact that my elapsed times

Snap Back to Slimmer Summer

Was it the plate-grabbing parade of grilled hot dogs and burgers? Or, possibly the small mountains of potato salad and cole slaw? Could it be the apple pie a la mode or that dish of strawberries swimming in whipped cream? Whatever gastronomic indescretions marked your 4th of July celebration, now is the time to turn toward more reasonable eating habits. To

Less Power, More Man-Truth

‘More power! More power!’ – “Home Improvement” star Tim Allen’s answer to workshop and life dilemmas Guys love Tim Allen, the venerable sitcom star who once protrayed a ham-handed TV not-quite-do-it-yourself expert on the sitcom “Home Improvement.” There wasn’t a problem “Tooltime Tim” couldn’t fix, or so he believed.  Every week he’d invariably hit a brick

Gateway to Healthy

‘Half of life is just showing up.” – Woody Allen It’s wintertime, and the excuses to dodge exercise and healthy living are many. You tell yourself: “It’s too cold to work out.” You bleat: “I’m too tired, and it gets dark early.” You rationalize: “Who’s going to eat healthy and give up snacks when the

Immune System Wintry Boost

I was out wakling a quiet, wooded trail last weekend, soaking in the crisp air and dappled sublight peaking through the tree branches above me. I was greeted by the calming voice of a brook dancing lightly across a rocky streambed nearby. I’ll carry that moment with me through the coming winter long after chilly

NYC Marathon Memories

The New York City Marathon is set for Sunday, which triggers for me a flood of memories recalling my own 26.2-mile odyssey through the city’s five boroughs on a painfully swollen knee. I ran the NYC Marathon just once. My 1979 race became a 5-plus hour slog achingly impeded by tendonitis in my left knee.

Heart Walk Action

In recent weeks I have been calling on some CEO friends to ask for their support — and the support of their employees — for this fall’s Heart Walk, a big fundraiser in our community for the American Heart Association. The reception by business leaders has been enthusiastic. The Heart Walk is shaping up as a

Meditation vs. Memory Loss

Meditation has been regarded as a useful tool for those seking to reduce stress in their daily lives.

It turns out that regular meditation also appears to have a positive effect on memory.

A recently published study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease noted that meditation increases blood flow in the brain, which promotes improvement in memory. Positive results in the brain from meditation were detected in as few as eight weeks.
